Spend a Weekend Discovering the Zrmanja Canyon

25 Sep 2025

The Zrmanja River stretches for 69 kilometers, but its most dramatic section is the 10-kilometer canyon between  Obrovac and the Novigrad Sea. This area is protected as a significant landscape and is the only part of the river navigable by small boats.

The river rises near the town of Gračac and winds through wild karst terrain before flowing into the Adriatic. One of the most unforgettable ways to experience the canyon is by boat or kayak, gliding between steep cliffs where the river has carved deep into the rock. To reach the canyon, you first pass across the Novigrad Sea, then enter the river for an 18-kilometer route that takes you past the charming town of Obrovac before arriving at Jankovića Buk, the last navigable waterfall. Here, visitors can take a refreshing swim in the clear, turquoise water.
Upstream from Jankovića Buk, the upper Zrmanja is a paradise for rafting and canoeing, especially in spring when the water levels rise. Trips usually start in Muškovci or Obrovac, offering an exciting adventure for outdoor enthusiasts.
If you prefer to explore on foot, try the riverside hiking trail. Starting from Obrovac (near the old bus station), a marked path leads directly to Jankovića Buk in about an hour. Along the way, you’ll pass the ruins of historic stone watermills and reach the unique spot where the river’s freshwater meets the salty sea.

For breathtaking panoramas, head to Pariževačka Glavica, also known as the Pueblo Plateau. Located about 30 minutes’ drive from Novigrad, this viewpoint sits on a 200-meter cliff and offers spectacular views of the emerald-green river and the rugged southern Velebit mountains. The plateau is famous as one of the filming locations for the classic Winnetou westerns. From the parking area, it’s just a short 5–6 minute walk along a clearly marked trail.

Did you know?
Because of its unspoiled nature and striking turquoise waters, Zrmanja is often called the “Hidden Beauty of Dalmatia.”
The river is home to diverse wildlife, including freshwater turtles, herons, and even rare fish species.
Obrovac, the small town you pass along the way, has a rich history dating back to Roman times and offers a glimpse into traditional Dalmatian life.
