“Thought-provoking, moving, and inspiring… Universe on Stage simultaneously immerses the audience in the wonders of our universe and entertains with stunning visuals and score.” – Hylton Kallner, CEO Discovery Bank

Blending science, storytelling, and live orchestral music, The Black Hole Symphony takes audiences on a journey through the mysteries of the universe. The production combines a cinematic visual experience with original compositions by Universe on Stage and poetic narration, exploring everything from Einstein’s theories and the birth of stars to neutron stars, gravitational waves, and the enigmatic pull of black holes.

“The music and visuals work together in a way that’s genuinely transporting. You feel like you’re on the journey with them, part of the unfolding story.” Laurice Taitz-Buntman, audience member

What began as an intimate performance at The Bioscope at 44 Stanley – where fewer than 80 people first witnessed their fusion of science and symphony – has grown into a nationwide phenomenon. Universe on Stage has since performed to more than 20,000 people across South Africa in over 30 sold-out shows, including appearances at Joburg Theatre and a special collaboration with Joburg Ballet. Their shows has also attracted a remarkably diverse audience, drawing people of all ages and backgrounds. While the subject matter explores complex scientific ideas, the production presents them in a way that feels engaging, entertaining, and accessible.

Created by physicist Dr Luca Pontiggia and actuary-composer Yasheen Modi – affectionately known by fans as the “rockstar scientists” – Universe on Stage translates the wonder of the cosmos into music and imagery that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally moving. The production connects vast cosmic ideas with small, human moments, making the scale of the universe feel both awe-inspiring and deeply personal.

For this production, the experience is elevated by a live 32-piece string ensemble from the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, bringing added depth and power to the sweeping score and visuals.

“Can’t wait for the next one. I don’t think there are enough words to describe the experience.” – Mish Cheri, audience member
