Grain-fed, lazy-aged prime cuts are the order of the day and most places will let you order a side dish of the popular local staple pap (maize meal) with tomato and onion gravy. Don't be afraid of the 'monkey gland sauce' on offer, it is a just a sweet, tangy barbecue-style sauce that has absolutely nothing to do with monkeys. And of course the perfect accompaniment to a great big juicy steak is a large glass of red wine - wherever you go the South African vintages on offer won't disappoint.
