What's On for the top upcoming sports events you are going to want to attend.
Adventure SportsDriving behind a mini-bus taxi, on the highway, in the rain (or being a passenger inside one for that matter) is certainly one way to set your pulse racing...but, there are a lot more fun ways to get your heart rate up in this city.
CyclingFor avid cyclists you have come to the right place, the city has a large cycling community and the surrounding area has lots of interesting cycle routes. For the ultimate cyclist's guide to the city read our feature from Crispian Olver, an environmental activist, entrepreneur, and passionate cyclist who is campaigning to make Joburg more cycling-friendly. If you are looking for cycling tours try Lebo's Soweto Backpackers or Mulaudzi ‘s Alexandra Bicycle Tours.
Wear a helmet. Try to anticipate what motorists will do, and don’t assume that they have seen you. Indicate your intentions by signalling. And, of course, always be courteous and help other cyclists.
Escape RoomsA cross between a game show and a Sherlock Holmes novel, at an 'Escape Room' you and your team are locked inside a mysterious room and tasked with solving a number of clues and puzzles to escape and complete your mission.
The escape room craze started in Japan, marketed at stressed city dwellers looking to relieve the pressures of urban life by becoming the fantasy heroes of their own real-life video game. The game has since gone global with hundreds of escape room challenges, with themes ranging from Harry Potter to Star Wars, operating in major cities around the world, including Joburg.
GolfJoburg is golfers' paradise with more golf courses in one city than probably anywhere else in the world. Just within a a 10km radius of Sandton there are 15 courses. Factor in year-round sunshine and highly competitive pricing and it's no wonder this town has a major share of golfing fanatics.
Clubs are mostly closed on a Monday and open on every other day at 06:00 or 06:30. Smart-casual golf attire is required, although you are allowed to play in shorts. Courses generally have 3 tiers of prices - members, affiliated visitors and non-affiliated visitors. Affiliation means being in possession of a South African official handicap. If you are planning on more than a couple of games during your visit, it may be worth getting an official handicap. See www.golfclub.co.za for details. A caddy is virtually always available - you’ll have to pay R15 to the caddy foundation, for his lunch and a tip, as well as the caddy fee. Usually your tip should be 50% higher than the amount the caddy master will tell you is the minimum.
