Many members of the Estonian diaspora (väliseestlased, or ‘foreign Estonians’) have kept close ties with the homeland. Others, however, are just starting to seek their roots. Among them and among ‘home Estonians’ (kodueestlased) genealogy has become a popular pursuit. The Estonian Genealogy Society was founded in 1990, but its direct forerunner dates to 1931, during the first period of independence. With 200 active members and clubs in Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu and Viljandi, the society brings together Estonians with an interest in their own ancestors and genealogy in general.
