An internationally acclaimed bassist, composer, and bandleader, Carlo Mombelli is rightly regarded as one of South Africa’s "most significant and restlessly creative musical voices". He moves easily between jazz, classical, and experimental styles, building music that feels considered yet unconstrained. For Chapter 7 he collaborates with an outstanding ensemble of South African musicians.
At the centre is Msaki, whose voice and spoken word bring emotional gravity to the stage. She’s one of those rare artists who commands both intimate rooms and vast audiences with ease. We last saw her perform at the Standard Bank Gallery in 2025 and were utterly absorbed.
Kyle Shepherd – one of South Africa’s most distinctive musical thinkers – joins on piano. His playing is lyrical without being indulgent, grounded yet exploratory, shaped by years of composition, collaboration, and international performance.
Marcus Wyatt, a SAMA-winning trumpeter and composer, bridges South African jazz heritage and contemporary expression. He's collaborated with icons from Miriam Makeba to Abdullah Ibrahim, and continues to lead projects that bring jazz traditions into new contexts.
On drums is Jonno Sweetman, known within jazz circles for an original, responsive style that adapts fluidly to the musicians around him. With deep drumming roots, he has been described as one of the most original and sensitive drummers on South Africa’s contemporary music scene.
We are so excited for the magic this ensemble will make together, performing music from Mombelli’s upcoming release, The World Is Dancing on the Edge of a Cliff.
Don't miss Mombelli's Chapter 7 at Wits Theatre in Braamfontein on Sat, Feb 21 from 19:00 – 21:00. Book now.
