Where better to host a blueberry festival than in a town named ‘Blueberry’, or to give its local name, Borovnica. If you’re travelling from Ljubljana then you can start your day by riding an old steam train from the central railway station, (09:30 departure) and enjoy a short journey along the old Vienna - Trieste line. Look out for the remaining column of the old viaduct, in its day it was the largest in Europe. The festival is a traditional fair and you’ll be amazed at all the wonderful delicacies that can be made with this tiny blue fruit. Local folk music and dances are on the programme, plus children’s events, a lace exposition, vintage cars and a carnival procession.
