Strauss' famed operetta, which was his greatest success at the time of its premiere, is an example of the composer's ability to express music full of lightness and grace, specifically highlighted through its elaborate vocal parts. The action, placed in spectacular scenery, brought to life the exoticism of Gypsy folklore, intertwined with the splendor of Viennese salons. In this production at the Grand Theatre in Łódź is directed by Tomasz Konina, who has moved The Gypsy Baron's setting from the eighteenth century to the interwar period, drawing upon the dance cinema of Bob Fosse. Of course, this time of optimism begins to show cracks as another world conflict approaches and the characters have to pose internal questions about their future. Performance in Polish with Polish subtitles.
