In this unfortunate era of selfies when nothing can be immortalised without one’s own mug in the mix (a mug that is then immediately uploaded to the world for instant derision or praise), it may be hard to imagine a time when taking a photo was an art that took both skill and patience. A new exhibition entitled Photography in the Ottoman Empire explores the post-Daguerreotype world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries as photographed by four commercial artists of the former Ottoman Empire. Discover long-gone markets and bazaars, exotic landscapes and people in peculiar dress that today’s Instagrammers and Snapchatters might call ‘seriously vintage’.
