Henryk Cześnik "Motives and other stories"
May 12 - Jun 26 2022
Pl. Zdrojowy 2, Sopot
It is his and only his inner portrait human, or rather humanity. It is an irrational image of Homo sapiens that calls itself a supposedly rational being. Therefore, the heroes of his canvases are deformed caricatures of characters - torn, dismembered, deformed and perhaps terribly lonely in his escape from a reality that hurts so much it tears apart. It is a sincere and real world, and at the same time metaphysically existential. Suffering and pain have their color, space, temperament and even a kind of romance here. Is it possible? Everything seems possible in Henryk Cześnik's paintings. Only He can Combine the unbearable charm of decadence with the experiential and at the same time questionable romance of corporeality. Only he draws sarcasm and irony from the myth and symbol of the horse in Polish (and even European) painting, and fascinating. Only he treats "noble and dramatic" themes with a perverse distance, at the same time giving them only a characteristic feature. In his work, he boldly deals not only with the symbolism of the seven deadly sins, but above all with the whole literal the experience of "expulsion from paradise". The result is loneliness, illness, suffering, madness and the overwhelming feeling that life hurts at times, real and experimental pain.
