The casino in Sopot was responsible in no small part for the city gaining the moniker of the ‘Monte Carlo of the north’ in the inter-war period. It helped put Sopot on the map but it wasn’t without its controversies. The city authorities invested considerably in the casino and associated services to raise the city’s profile and attract more visitors from neighbouring Poland (Sopot or Zoppot was then part of the Free City of Danzig) and from Germany. But the city didn’t just invest – it earned a considerable amount too directly from the casino business, much of which it owned. This very interesting and informative exhibition comes with excellent descriptions in English and a fascinating collection of photos and artefacts. What makes it particularly interesting is that while it recognizes that the casino and resort attracted wealthy tourists and even crowned heads of state, the casino was very much a peoples’ casino with its core clientele being the residents of the Free City who came from all walks of life with many ordinary folk owning annual passes to the casino. The curators’ aim is to debunk some of the myths and untruths about the legend of the Zoppot Casino and it’s well-worth a visit.
