Warsaw

Museum of Sports and Tourism

Warsaw's Museum of Sport and Tourism, quite handily, is also the home of Poland's Olympic Committee, both located in a very modern looking glass building in the city's northern Żoliborz district, from where the museum has been located since 2005. The museum's history goes quite far back, and is one of Europe's oldest of this type, functioning since 1952 in various locations. Today, the museum contains over 45,000 items, ranging from Greco busts, exploring the history of sport in Ancient Greece, to the more Polish orientated items such as medals, trophies, sports clothing through the ages, photos, books, documents and archival material - they've collected a lot! Included are old penny farthing bicycles as well as trophies and memorabilia from the Warsaw Rowing Association, apparently the oldest sports organisation in town.

Split into various zones (inter-war years, 70s glory years, Salt Lake City etc), this is more than just a thorough look at Polish sport, it’s the final word. Film reels and sound effects complement often hilarious pictures (mustachioed supermen from bygone times triumphantly lifting dumbbells). However this is no circus sideshow, and it soon becomes clear that the Poles have a proud and distinguished history across all fields, something apparent in the Olympic Hall of Fame which features scores of medals. Heroes such as ex Man City legend Kazimierz Deyna and ski champ Adam Małysz are all celebrated, and the vast collection even has room for a kayak once used by Pope John Paul II to row around the Mazurian Lakes. A new permanent exhibition, available from July/August 2020 titled The Fifth Page of Masovia will showcase the tourism industry in Poland's Masovia region. To top off your visit, there's a rooftop restaurant providing great views of the city skyline. To get to there, take buses 114 or 185. Alternatively, for those with a sporty spirit, the museum is right next to the river and well connected with bike tracks, just follow the trail north of the Vistulan Boulevards.

Average visiting time: 1hr.
