The exhibition of the War Order of Virtuti Militari (Latin: For Military Virtue), Poland's highest military decoration awarded for heroism, courage, and leadership in war, is presented here through the prism of tens of individuals to which it was awarded. The Order was created in 1792 by Stanisław II August Poniatowski, and is one of the oldest military decorations in the world still in use, equivalent in its merit to the British Victoria Cross and the American Medal of Honor. The exhibition features photographs, archival documents, and portraits of such Polish national heroes as Stanisław August, Józef Poniatowski, Tadeusz Kościuszko, Aleksander Fredro, Piotr Wysocki, Karol Anders, Józef Piłsudski, Edward Śmigły-Rydz, and many others. Many Virtuti Militari awards made by the communist regime were brought into question after 1989, and some of them were revoked. No new awards have been made since that year.
