Antun Boris Švaljek – A Cloud in the Mind
May 14 - Oct 1 2026
Trg Petra Zoranića 1
Deeply rooted in postmodern artistic thought, Švaljek developed a visual language entirely his own: rich with imagination, irony, grotesque humour and restless experimentation. Moving effortlessly between drawing, painting and sculpture, his works blend echoes of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau aesthetics with influences ranging from surrealism and magical realism to pop art, comics and expressive colourism.
The result is a strikingly layered body of work that feels at once intellectual and playful, sophisticated and rebellious. Dreamlike figures, theatrical compositions and unexpected visual narratives reveal an artist fascinated by both the absurdities and beauty of human experience.
Born in Zagreb in 1951 and closely connected to Zadar from the early 1980s onward, Švaljek spent decades shaping the Croatian contemporary art scene as both artist and professor. Awarded the Order of Danica Hrvatska for his contribution to Croatian culture, he remained creatively active until his passing in 2023.
More than a retrospective, A Cloud in the Mind is an invitation into the brilliantly eccentric universe of an artist whose unmistakable style became, in the words of critics, simply — “Švaljekian.”
