Once a Braamfontein student favourite, Great Dane earned its reputation for a dimly lit interior, a packed courtyard, and quirky touches like a floor covered in five-cent coins. While never a strictly gay bar, Saturdays affectionately became known as “Gay Dane,” drawing a devoted queer following and DJs who mixed everything from electro and 2000s R&B to 80s power ballads. After a brief hiatus, the beloved venue has found a new home in Melville, bringing with its signature Long Islands, unbeatable drink specials, and an inclusive space that keeps Joburg’s night owls coming back.
