To use either bus you need to purchase an Activ card, which will cost 3.70 lei, then charge it with a minimum 7.00 lei (the price of two trips). The card can be recharged anytime however, and used on Bucharest buses, trams and trolleybuses. Buy it from the kiosk next to the bus stop.

Italy Actually It wasn't that hard to get to city center! Plenty of ATMs and also a Bank desk changing at a decent rate (in the hall downstair, just before the exit to the bus stop). Then a booth selling you the card. Finally, just put the ticket close to the validation machine and got green light. Met inspectors during the trip and they checked my ticket: no problems. Only, I was later told that you cannot recharge the airport card, so I had to buy a new one for central buses (maybe the clerk was wrong?).

Johnson I have never met such a confusing system. When I asked the other passengers help to validate my card, they did everything possible to put me in trouble in cooperation with the driver who then called the inspectors to fine me. Disgusting, dishonest people!

UK Very complicated way of using the bus ticket. Despite having the ticket for me and my daughter, and a receipt showing I had bought the ticket less than 30 mins before, I was fined 100 LEI as I didn't frank the ticket properly when I got on the bus. This is approx 20 pounds in UK money.
I was to scared to go on a bus again in Bucharest, as these inspectors are so common, and seem to fine most tourists for no apparent good reason. BEWARE

Does the booth from which I purchase the Active Card accept anything else than RON? Can I use a Canadian bank issued Visa card? Will there be any charges other than the current $-RON currency exchange if I use Visa?
