A wide and busy boulevard leading out of Sofia’s centre to the east, Dragan Tsankov was named after one of Bulgaria's most prominent prime ministers in the immediate post-liberation period.

Having worked for the Bulgarian cause abroad before the liberation Tsankov returned to hold the position of PM for a short period in 1880 and again from 1883-1884, in the interim period he was interior minister. He was also chairman of the parliament from 1901-1903.

Immediately after the liberation politics was split between the Conservatives and Liberals, Tsankov being a leader of the Liberals and championing the rights of the middle classes as opposed to the Conservatives, who were supported by large landowners and industrialists.
