Best World Cuisine Restaurant in Ljubljana

Ljubljana has no end of fantastic dining options including many Gostilnas offering terrific home cooked meals, but sometimes you just fancy some flavours from further afield. Here's our contenders for the Best World Cuisine. Let's take a look at this year's nominees:

Cantina Mexicana

Fun on two floors in one of the city’s most popular courtyards, Cantina Mexicana is positively aglow with bright colours, strange sculptures, grass growing on the ceiling and some nice lighting tricks behind the long ground-floor bar. The food is classic Tex-Mex as you’d expect, and appears to be fairly popular. If nothing else, this is one of the quirkiest and silliest places in the city centre and even if you’re not hungry is well worth a visit for a drink or two. Read more...

Shambala

A small part of Asia comes to life in the centre of Ljubljana. Not only does Shambala's kitchen turn out some of the best (and spiciest) Asian cuisine in Slovenia, but the tranquil, almost meditative, ambience of the place allows you to enjoy your meal in a state of perfect relaxation. Guests can dine either in the main dining room with its glass ceiling or in the more intimate room with a vaulted ceiling. During the warmer months, diners can also take advantage of the pleasant garden. The menu features seafood dishes, vegetarian options and grilled specialities. Read more...

Namaste

Set along the beautiful Breg promenade in the old town, Namaste was the first Indian restaurant in Slovenia. With its soft, yellow-hued lighting, hand-painted walls and a relaxed atmosphere, this local institution also offers one of Ljubljana’s most romantic dining experiences of any flavour, while the house specialties from the Rajasthan and Punjab regions are prepared individually with spices directly imported from the subcontinent and can be ordered to suit all tastes. Libanonske meze

This exceedingly popular Lebanese restaurant can be found down the bustling, cobbled pedestrian thoroughfare known as Trubarjeva Cesta in the old town. As the name suggests many of the dishes on the extensive menu are mezze, ie the flavourful appetisers on small share plates that are common amongst the cuisines of the Eastern Mediterranean. Most of these are vegetarian friendly, but meat eaters will of course find plenty to salivate over as well. Read more...

Argentino

The journey out to BTC is well worth the effort, for Argentino really needs to be experienced to be believed. Huge and based on a classic Argentinean hacienda on two levels with further seating outside, the interior designer had a great time thinking this one up. Featuring vast paintings, enormous mirrors, video projectors, a fabulous bar and an even lovelier open kitchen, which turns out a dizzying array of mouth-watering Latin American dishes including some of the best steaks in Ljubljana. There's also an excellent wine cellar with some 130 different Argentinean wines. Read more...

Zaika

Follow your nose to the far end of Ljubljana's colourful Trubarjeva Street and you'll discover the source of those mouthwatering aromas is none other than Zaika - an aptly named restaurant, because everything served here is indeed delicious. The star of the show is chef Zia, who cut his proverbial chops in various well-known kitchens around the city, before opening up his own pint-sized passion project that concocts some incredible flavours from the subcontinent and dishes you won't find anywhere else in town.
