Spring settles in with a flourish as Joburg Ballet’s Spring Season of Dance lights up The Joburg Theatre. Across three dazzling programmes – the glittering South African National Dance Trust (SANDT) Spring Gala, the cosmic world premiere Celestial Bodies, and the luminous mixed bill First Light – audiences are invited to journey through the timeless, the experimental, and the boldly new. It’s ballet at its most alive: steeped in tradition, while dancing new paths. Performances run from Fri, Oct 3 – Sun, Oct 12, 2025.

Fri, Oct 3: SANDT Spring Gala

Joburg Ballet's Spring Season of Dance opens on Fri, Oct 3 at 18:00 with the SANDT Spring Gala evening. Guest artists from London’s Royal Ballet – Sarah Lamb, Ryoichi Hirano, and Lara Turk – join Joburg Ballet and WGRUV Dance Company in a showcase of brilliance. Expect exquisite works from legendary choreographers, both local and international. For one night only, Johannesburg’s stage becomes a crossroads of ballet heritage and new inspiration. Tickets range from R300 – R700 p.p. Book here.

Sat, Oct 4 and Sun, Oct 5: Celestial Bodies

On Sat, Oct 4, at both 14:00 and 19:00, and Sun, Oct 5 at 14:00, science and art collide in a luminous performance. In this world premiere, choreographer Mario Gaglione partners with physicist Dr Luca Pontiggia and composer Yasheen Modi. Together they weave movement, sound, and starlight into Celestial Bodies – a work that feels both transient and infinite, carrying audiences beyond the theatre into the mysteries of the cosmos. Tickets range from R200 – R510 p.p. Book here.

Thu, Oct 9 – Sat, Oct 11: First Light

The season comes to a close with First Light, a radiant collection of classical and contemporary works that blend our heritage with bold new perspectives. Shannon Glover revives Raymonda Act 3, a jewel of the Russian ballet tradition; Veronica Paeper’s Concerto for Charlie brings Shostakovich to life; and Bruno Miranda dips into Spain’s fiery treasures with Classics of Spain. Adding fresh energy, two new creations shine from within the company: Chloé Blair’s moving Nothing Twice, a meditation on love and connection, and Tumelo Lekana’s Mpho, an evocative journey of healing and self-discovery that made its debut at London’s Royal Opera House. Performances take place on Thu, Oct 9 at 11:00, Fri, Oct 10 at 19:00, Sat, Oct 11 at 14:00, and Sun, Oct 12, 14:00. Tickets range from R130 – R510 p.p. Book here.

Note: Discounts (excluding SANDT Spring Gala) are available with 50% off for children, 35% for Friends of the Ballet, 15% for pensioners, and 10% groups of 10 or more.
