French artist Henri Matisse is known worldwide as the reference for Modernist art. For the first time ever, a wide selection of his work will be exhibited in South Africa at this blockbuster exhibition. A number of paintings, drawings, collages and prints covering all the dominant themes in the artist’s body of work, from his early Fauvist years, through his interest in exoticism and orientalism, to the paper cut-outs that he produced in the last years of his life, will be on display as well as all 20 prints from Matisse's famous 1947 collection Jazz.

The exhibition is curated by Patrice Deparpe, from the Musée Matisse in France, a gallery which was established by Matisse himself, and Professor Federico Freschi from the University of Johannesburg's Art, Design and Architecture faculty. You don't need to be an art expert to appreciate Matisse's universally popular works, but if you do want to understand more about what lies behind Matisse's creations, the gallery is hosting a series of educational programmes in conjunction with the exhibition.

Open 08:00-16:30, Sat 09:00-16:00. Closed Sun and public holidays.

Visitors can also make use of a free shuttle bus service between the gallery and Park Station. Book your place on the twice daily shuttle bus here.
