Kingsmead Book Fair

Saturday May 25 08:30–18:00       132 Oxford Rd (entrance on Tottenham Ave), Melrose
The Kingsmead Book Fair is an annual celebration of literary culture with a day-long programme of events including writer's talks and panel discussions, plus plenty of great books and delicious food for sale. An event for the whole family there's something on the programme for any age group and generally a good mix of topics ranging from art to politics led by some interesting South African personalities. Hosted at Kingsmead School in Rosebank there's plenty of outdoor space and a courtyard in which to socialise.

Highlights of the 2019 programme include: discussions about all things money and finance with entrepreneur Vusi Thembekayo (of Business & Life Lessons of a Black Dragon); a panel discussion on learning lessons from the past with best-selling historian and novelist Simon Sebag Montefiore (known for global best-sellers like Young Stalin and Jerusalem: The Biography); and the star Soweto-born chef Lesego Semenya talks about the stories and memories behind the traditional dishes featured in his bestselling cookbook Dijo.

Also look out for fierce debate on contemporary South African society and politics from the likes of journalists Ferial Hafajjee, Ray Ndlovu, Mandy Wiener, Angelo Fick, cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro and best-selling writer Sihle Khumalo (of Dark Continent My Black Arse) and Khaya Dlanga (To Quote Myself) among many others and make sure to check out the special Artist's Studio Sessions (entrance free) which this year sees Dr Sam Nduli presenting unique insights into the remarkable Standard Bank African Art Collection which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
