One way to get to travel to unusual places across Johannesburg is to follow yoga instructor Steven Heyman. Heyman, originally from Belgium organises Vinyasa Flow yoga sessions on city rooftops, at art galleries and hosts a regular Sunday class outdoors at Emmarentia Botanical Gardens. For Mandela Day the crowds gathered at Constitution Hill to be guided through 27 different yoga poses, one for each year that Nelson Mandela spent in prison. The proceeds from that class were donated entirely to charity.

Heyman began practising yoga in 2007. He ditched a corporate job - he studied commercial engineering - to become a full-time instructor in 2014. His classes accommodate advanced and beginner yogis, and are taught at a slow but intense pace.

"Joburg is a very busy and high-paced city. There is an amazing energy, but at the same time the fast pace and daily demands can cause lots of pressure and stress. Add to that modern means of communication and lots of sitting behind desks and computers, and you have a recipe for pain, aches, and a permanently busy mind - modern problems for which yoga can present an ancient solution.”
