Encounters is the new exhibition by young Joburg-based artist Andrew Ntshabele. Working in a fusion of collage and acrylic, his images are expressive visions of everyday Joburg scenes, based on photos he takes during his daily travels around the inner city.

Ordinary people and their everyday street life, such as construction workers, hawkers, informal recyclers, commuters and school children, form the colourful focal point of his large canvases.  Painted over collages of clippings from newspapers, his works tell multiple stories both through the headlines and the portraits of the people painted over them.

The title for this latest exhibition “Encounters” is interpreted as “an unexpected meeting or experience that happens by chance”, and the show delights in portraying the many extraordinary and ordinary moments of everyday life in the Joburg City Centre.
