In 1999 Cameroonian artist Barthélémy Toguo dreamed up a space that would serve as a platform for creative and agricultural activities alike.

The dream became a reality. Since 2007, the Bandjoun Station has existed in the heart of Cameroon as an art centre, a town hall and resource centre, and it is both an incubator of Toguo’s ideas and an extension of his practice.

In Life on Earth, Toguo’s fourth solo exhibition with Stevenson gallery, the artist exhibits a series of striking mosaic works reminiscent of the large-scale murals that cover the walls of Bandjoun Station.

In addition to the mosaic works, which speak to his interest in community, some of the artist’s paintings will also be on display, showcasing his interests in ecology and “his experiences of the Anthropocene, spanning trade, the social toll of climate change and humankind’s fraying relationship with the natural environment.”

Life on Earth is open until 29 September.
