Brett Murray's solo show at Rosebank's Circa Gallery is a departure for the provocative sculptor, whose work we've come to associate with biting political commentary. In Brood, Murray places satire aside and takes a more personal turn. It's an intimate and very sincere reflection on those in our inner sanctum; the friends and family we rely on. "I felt quite exposed creating these sculptures. I’m my worst critic – and worried that what I was doing was schmaltzy, so the process made me vulnerable," says Murray.

Murray draws on the animal kingdom to reflect on our tribes as a grounding force in this increasingly turbulent world. Reflecting on the Covid lockdown, the artist explains, “You value your family and friends so much more when the world is going crazy. It’s taken me many years to realise the importance of intimacy and the confidence to have this tenderness present in my work. Now I get it completely.” We're moved by this tender new direction and think Brood is a must-see show.
