2021 marks the 10th year of the Cassirer Welz Award, presented by Joburg's Bag Factory artist studios in partnership with leading art auction house Strauss & Co. To mark the occasion Bag Factory presents a two-month-long retrospective exhibition looking back at the work of previous winners at their pop-up gallery space at the Oxford Parks development in Rosebank.

The Cassirer Welz award was founded in 2011 by the late Nadine Gordimer in celebration of her husband Reinhold Cassirer’s love of the arts. Each year a young emerging South African artist (aged under 35) working in painting or drawing, is awarded the opportunity to spend 10 weeks in residence at the Bag Factory studios and get to host their first solo exhibition.

Previous winners of the award whose works are on display in the exhibition include Blessing Ngobeni (2012), Asanda Kupa (2013) and Keneilwe Mokoena (2015) and one of our new favourites, 2020 winner Levy Pooe.

The exhibition is hosted at the Bag Factory pop up in Oxford Parks (199 Oxford Rd). Visits are by appointment (unless regulations change) and the exhibition is open Mon to Fri 09:00-17:00. To arrange a visit email info@bagfactoryart.org.za.
