Visiting the shop is like stepping back in time and an experience in itself. City Outfitters is one of the last remaining outfitting stores to have opened in Johannesburg in the 1900s. These stores derived their name from the tailoring and outfitters licence they needed to offer tailoring or clothing retail services in South Africa. At the time, City Outfitters sold men’s clothes, shoes, and accessories mostly imported from the United States.

A three-generation family business, City Outfitters opened in 1931 and continues to this day. This is the place to find brands like Florsheim Shoes, Alaska, Converse, and more. Think '80s American fashion with an urban twist: big Lee brass belt buckles, Converse All-Stars, vintage Levi's, and bucket hats.

The store is a wonder to browse, jammed full of vintage items, including a wooden telephone booth complete with a phone and a Western Union Telegram advert, that show its colourful history, including a letter from John F. Kennedy in 1960, thanking Mr Mayet for his "friendly message... sent after my election to the presidency".
