South Africa's Disco Soup initiative puts the spot...
Hosted by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the Alliance Française, So Chef! is an annual series of events held in cities across South Africa that celebrate French cuisine and culinary culture.

As part of this year's So Chef! The Alliance Française hosts the second edition of Disco Soupe Joburg. 'Disco Soupe' (also known as Schnippeldisko), is a ‘protest soup’ against the problem of food wastage that started in Paris in 2012. The Disco Soupe aims to "fill bellies, instead of bins" while enjoying cooking lunch to a live DJ soundtrack.

The Disco Soupe cooking session sees people coming together to cook up and then eat unsold fruit and vegetables, that would ordinarily be thrown away, in a festive atmosphere with the aim of promoting healthy eating, the pleasures of cooking and enjoying food together as a community and of highlighting the problem of food wastage. Today, an incredible one-third of the food produced for our consumption is never eaten. Saving just 25% of this mammoth amount of food wastage would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people in the world.

Leading the cooking this year is Chef Joey Atchama from Reunion Island. The event is free, you just need to bring along your own vegetable knives and potato peelers.

The Disco Soupe starts at 11:00 and runs until 15:00 with DJs continuing to play after lunch until 16:00.
