First Sundays at Victoria Yards

Sunday Mar 3 10:00–15:00 …       16 Viljoen St, Lorentzville
share
Home to an expansive urban farm which lines its winding paved pathways and a community of makers, artists and artisans whose talents span everything from jewellery design and furniture-making to fashion, craft beer and baking, Victoria Yards is a creative hub on the eastern side of the city. It is located in a complex of restored industrial heritage buildings opposite the Nandos headquarters in the gritty suburb of Lorentzville.

On the first Sunday of the month Victoria Yards' resident artists open their studio doors, presenting an opportunity to meet the artists and get a look behind the scenes at their creative process. The Victoria Yards complex is home to a number of prominent local artists including Blessing Ngobeni, Ayanda Mabulu, James Delaney and world-renowned photographer Roger Ballen, as well as contemporary art galleries like Daville Baillie Gallery, Afropolitan Gallery, and Art Afrique, artisan workshops such as the Smelt glass studio and Hélène Thomas' Yol Bijoux Nomades jewellery workshop and a number of fashion boutiques and design studios including Tshepo Mohala's Tshepo The Jean Maker and Oscar Ncube's Dry bone co.

As part of the monthly event you can also look forward to a farmer’s market filled with organic produce from Victoria Yards' lush gardens and from neighbouring urban farms such as the nearby Bertrams Inner City Farm and find great food and drinks at places like the famous Fish and Chip Shop, the Impi Craft Brewery, the Foakes Roastery (who make excellent sourdough bread) and catering company Food I Love You who open up their kitchen for a farm-style breakfast and harvest table lunch.

Highlights of this month’s First Sundays include:

Third Landscapes by Roxy Kaczmarek
The University of Johannesburg Department of Art and MTech Fine Art partner with Victoria Yards for this solo exhibition by emerging artist Roxy Kaczmarek, on show during the First Sundays from 11:00-14:00. Interrogating the interactions between plants and people within the city, the exhibition spans multimedia, installation and printmaking, highlighting the contrast between the marginalised greenery in urban spaces and undisturbed natural areas.

Jonny Razor Cuts & Shaves pop-up barbershop
Travelling barbershop Jonny Razor make their Victoria Yards debut.

First Sundays Cycle ride
Look out for a neighbourhood cycle ride (bring your own bike) led by the Makers Valley Collective and The Whippet Cycling Co at 14:00 which follows a route through the surrounding suburbs of Troyeville, New Doornfontein, Bertrams, Bez Valley, Lorentzville and Judith's Paarl (contact the Makers Valley at info@makersvalley.joburg for more details). Foakes Coffee and the Impi craft brewery will be providing special drinks offers for cyclists.
