First Sundays at Victoria Yards

Sunday Oct 3 10:00–16:00 …       16 Viljoen St, Lorentzville
Home to an expansive urban farm which lines its winding paved pathways and a community of makers, artists and artisans whose talents span everything from jewellery design and furniture-making to fashion, craft beer and baking, Victoria Yards is a creative hub on the eastern side of the city. It is located in a complex of restored industrial heritage buildings opposite the Nandos headquarters in the gritty suburb of Lorentzville.

At the Victoria Yards' open days, resident artists open their studio doors to the public, presenting an opportunity to meet the artists and get a look behind the scenes at their creative process. Prominent artists who have studios at Victoria Yards include Blessing Ngobeni, Ayanda Mabulu, James Delaney and world-renowned photographer Roger Ballen.

In light of the restrictions posed by social distancing and safety, the festive 'First Sundays' theme returns in a quieter manner than previously when the open days presented an artistic block party for the local community. The new look Open Days may be a more low-key affair than previously but they still present a super opportunity to meet the makers, explore their studios and learn more about their work. As well as artists, you can also explore fashion studios, furniture design workshops and some incredible African craft and design shops that are keeping traditional African artisanal pottery, word carving and beadwork skills alive and explore the car boot sale-style market.

There's also plenty of food and beverages available including from the excellent Foakes Bakery and Coffee Roastery (who make quite simply the best baguettes in town) and the best fish and chips you'll find in Joburg, available from The Fish and Chip Shop.
