The exhibition Five Photographers – A Tribute to David Goldblatt brings together four Southern African photographers personally selected by the world famous photographer himself. Talking about choosing the photographers to include in this exhibition Goldblatt said “every now and then I see photographs that fill me with admiration and a sense of gladness for the strength and insight of the vision of photographers working here, very often with little reward or recognition”.

The photographers featured in the exhibition include David Goldblatt, Alexia Webster, Jabulani Dhlamini, award-winning Mozambique-based photographer Mauro Vombe and the late Cape Town-born photographer Pierre Crocquet, who died in 2013 aged just 47. Crocquet is best known for his critically-acclaimed project Pinky Promise, which dealt with the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. Goldblatt admits that “Pierre Crocquet tried to interest me in his work at a time when I was heavily committed to a major project. To my shame I failed to respond and when I finally tried to do so, he was dead. There can be few who engaged with paedophilia and child abuse so plainly, frankly and yet delicately as Crocquet. Seldom has any piece of work in photography and words been more frighteningly titled than Pinky Promise.”

Wed May 23 at 12:30: Walkabout and Q&A with curator John Fleetwood (former head of Market Photo Workshop).
