Leading up to the fourth season of William Kentridge’s Centre For The Less Good Idea, the Centre presents a double bill of two new cross-disciplinary performances as part of its For Once series of experimental art collaborations; City Deep and Elegy.

A new collaboration between acclaimed composer Clare Loveday and 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year Nandipha Mntambo, City Deep explores architecture as a metaphor for Joburg’s residents, interrogating how architecture and soundscapes shape and are shaped by the movement of people in Joburg.

A long-term project initiated in 2015, Elegy tackles the effects of rape-culture in South Africa, bringing together a group of female vocal performers who enact a ritual of mourning. Recalling the identity of LGBTQI+ and female rape and murder victims, the performance aims to evoke their presence with a sustained sung cry.
