Each year, the institute supports over 100 projects across the region. Through its research division, it also plays a vital role in advancing the humanities and social sciences in Southern Africa, collaborating with institutions and backing around 80 researchers annually. The institute brings together cultural programming and scholarly exchange under one art-driven, interdisciplinary roof.
IFAS initiatives and events

The Fête de la Musique is one of IFAS’ flagship public events in Johannesburg, held annually in June to coincide with World Music Day. Hosted at Victoria Yards, the festival transforms the space into a vibrant celebration of live music, showcasing a diverse lineup of artists. Alongside live performances, IFAS also runs the Live Music Lab, a professional development initiative that equips emerging artists and industry players with the tools and networks to thrive in the music sector. The festival is free and open to the public.
Création Africa is a more recent initiative launched in 2023 by the Institut Français, with IFAS as a key local partner. It supports the growth of Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) across Africa, with South Africa serving as a strategic hub. The programme operates on three fronts: a digital platform that connects creatives to funding opportunities and peer networks; sector-specific development, such as support for gaming, animation, fashion, and digital art; and strategic participation in international industry events.
In addition to these major programmes, IFAS regularly hosts exhibitions, artist residencies, film screenings, literary gatherings, and debate sessions. The best place to find out what's coming up is to follow @franceinsouthafrica on Instagram.
