#FreshlyPlated Joburg restaurant news - January 2021

more than a year ago
A new year is here and while this pandemic is still far from over and South Africa's third booze ban grinds on, there are as always more new dining experiences opening in Joburg in the coming weeks.

Here's this month's #FreshlyPlated round-up of the newest venues to check out in the city.

Upmarket Asian restaurant Tang to open on Nelson Mandela Square

A glitzy new restaurant, Tang, is set to open soon on Nelson Mandela Square in the old Wang Thai premises. The space is designed by award-winning Tristan Du Plessis and launched by seasoned restaurateur Nicky van Der Walt. The talent behind the menu is Chef de Cuisine Wesley Chen (from Cape Town's Mr Chan and Boudha Lounge) who is bringing signature dishes like Peking Duck, Black Cod Miso, Yellowtail sashimi and Wagyu Tomahawk steaks done on robata grills as well as a vast sushi and wok selection, Japanese Izakaya dishes and classic Cantonese style cooking. In addition to the restaurant, Tang will also have a 60-seater Moët & Chandon Champagne bar on the terrace. The team promise a Pan-Asian restaurant that is "high end, yet accessible luxury" and which will present "an oasis with a resort feel in the middle of Africa’s richest square mile".

The Leopard moves to Greenside

Andrea Burgener and Nick Gordon's fantastic deli The Leopard Food Company has closed their 44 Stanley branch and moved to the Village Green Centre on Greenway Road in Greenside. In the fridge you'll find their always popular daily selection of heat-up or just go ahead and serve take-home meals, freshly made salads, preserves and sauces and on the shelves a carefully sourced selection of the finest ingredients that Burgener herself uses in the kitchen. Keeping up to speed with our socially distanced times The Leopard now also delivers and their easy-to-navigate online shop offers a mouth-watering selection of products.

Look out for them opening in early February.

Glory launches a new secret garden pop-up

Glory, one of our favourite local pop-up restaurants, has a new secret pop-up in the Norwood suburbs. The new pop-up offers a la carte and set menus, as well as private chef dinners and collection if you would rather eat their fantastic Chinese, Thai and Korean-inspired dishes from the comfort of home. Contact them via their Instagram page to make a booking or order.

Cremalat cheese coming to Sandton

Cremalat, a name that combines “crema” (cream) and “latte” (milk) in Italian, is a family-run restaurant, cheese shop, cheese factory, and Italian deli in Edenvale. In mid-February Cremalat opens its first deli in the northern suburbs, one block from Sandton City in Sandton Central. The plans are to launch an Italian cheesemonger and deli and later a sit-down offering where you can enjoy Cremalat's classic home-style Italian breakfasts and lunches. Keep your eye on the Cremalat facebook page for the latest.
