As part of Gardens of the Golden City first season of open garden days since the pandemic started, the gates of the beautiful Shepstone Gardens will be opening to the public on two consecutive Sundays in July. These open days present a wonderful chance to take a glimpse inside some of the city's most beautiful private gardens and are always a great day out for anybody with an interest in horticulture.

Located in Mountain View on the slopes of the Observatory Ridge, Shepstone Gardens is usually used as a function venue for weddings and other celebrations. The owners took inspiration from 18th Century English gardens, putting in meandering curved pathways that lead theatrically to cool ponds, hidden courtyards, follies and other romantic hideaways. Plant-wise its a place of contrasts with lofty ferns, clivias, plenty of succulents and aloes for winter colours and jacaranda trees and towering palms providing some grandeur.

Find the gardens at 12 Hope Road, Mountain View. Entrance R50, kids under 12 free. Visitors can also look forward to food and refreshments on sale at the tea garden.
