Freaky Friday meets The Rainbow Nation in 2017 multi-award-winning comedy High Fantasy. Shot almost entirely on an iPhone 7 with a largely-improvised script, the film opens when Lexi, a young white woman, invites her two best friends; Xoli; a politically radical black woman, and Tatiana, a happy-go-lucky coloured woman, for a road trip to her family’s isolated farm in the countryside. Unbeknownst to her friends however, she has also invited a young black man, Thami, whose chauvinism quickly runs afoul of the group. The morning after they arrive for their trip, the group wake up and discover that they have all swapped bodies.

The characters are all recent university graduates who participated in the #FeesMustFall movement and against this backdrop the film tackles issues of race, class and gender identity in modern South Africa. Through colloquial dialogue, references to modern issues and biting social commentary High Fantasy also offers a brilliant snapshot of common conversations and disillusionments amongst socially-conscious South African youth.
