German-South African architect and bodybuilder Hermann Kallenbach arrived in Joburg in 1896. Kallenbach designed a number of buildings in Joburg and Durban, including religious, commercial and residential buildings, most notably the Koening Building in Durban which was described as 'bringing Joburg urbanity to the coastal city'.

Kallenbach is however best known for his friendship with Gandhi (Gandhi once described Kallenbach as his 'soul mate') whom he met in 1904. Kallenbach designed the house in the Joburg suburb of Orchards, called The Kraal (now known as Satyagraha House), where he and Gandhi lived together from 1907 to 1909. He was also the owner of the Tolstoy farm outside the city where the families of satyagrahis were housed.

The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation traces the footprints left by Gandhi and Kallenbach in Joburg, wandering through the hills of Sylvia Pass passing over Kallenbach Drive and Linksfield Ridge. Explore Kallenbach’s remaining stonework on the walls, steps and boundries at the top of Kallenbach Drive and pay a visit to the mediation stones on the site of Kallenbach’s old home.

The tour lasts approximately three hours. Booking is essential. The starts and ends at Sylvia's Market in Observatory.
