Jacaranda Walks with Johannesburg Heritage Foundation

Celebrate Joburg's annual jacaranda season with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation on one of their shorter neighbourhood walks this spring.

Keeping to Covid protocols the tours will not go inside any of the buildings on the route and there is a limit of 25 people per tour. Booking is absolutely essential and there is a no mask, no walk rule. Email to book. Tours cost R100 per person.

Saturday October 24, from 15:30–17:00 
Rockridge Road, Parktown

This walk starts from the magnificent Northwards mansion in Parktown, famed for the stupendous views over the so-called 'parks' suburbs from its garden terrace. The tour then takes a stroll along pretty jacaranda-lined Rockridge Road to admire some of the most famous designs of the architect Herbert Baker including Stone House and Pilrig, ended at the gorgeously landscaped gardens of the Hans Merensky Foundation.

Saturday October 31, from 15:30–17:00 
The Valley Road, Parktown

This tour takes a walk along historic The Valley Road, taking in the many beautiful homes found in the area, starting at Northwards, and walking down the ridge past Moot House, The Bell House, Prospect Terrace and the eclectic Jesmond (as viewed from the street).

Linksfield Ridge

Take a hike along the Linksfield Ridge and through the Harvey Nature Reserve, where you can admire a fantastic view over the jacarandas in both Kensington and Orange Grove. This walk is strenuous so is only suitable for the fit and prepared (wear good walking shoes!).

Pallinghurst Road in Westcliff

Join Joburg Heritage on this walking tour along the oldest street in the historic Westcliff suburb and once the stomping ground of Joburg's early mining magnates the Randlords. The tour takes in many of the grandest properties on this leafy street including the Hope School and the baronial Glenshiel, whose marvellous gardens present some of the best views of in the city. views of the blooming jacaranda trees to be enjoyed. Stops include heritage landmark homes like Ye Rokkes (built 1902), the Duntreath mansion designed by Herbert Baker and Francis Flemming, Ferryvale and its expansive gardens and Sir Frederick Spencer Lister's home Cranborne that has been partly modernised to allow for more expansive views of the city.

Upstairs Downstairs in Westcliff

This walk goes up and down the hidden public staircases straddling the Westcliff ridge to view the homes and gorgeous jacarandas found on Wexford Avenue and Woolston Road in the grand suburb of Westcliff.
