Jewish History Tour in Doornfontein

In preparation for the Jewish New Year African Secrets have restarted their Jewish Doornfontein tour. The tour takes you through the neighbourhood of Doornfontein which was home to half of the Jewish community in Johannesburg in 1910, past historic landmarks and explores the remains of what was one of the largest Jewish shtetl's in Johannesburg.

The tour starts on the corner of Dora St and Beit St, near the entrance to Ellis Park Stadium, and from there you will walk to a number of landmarks including the Lions Shul built in 1906, Der Yiddisher Arbeter-klub (Jewish Workers Club), the first Greek Orthodox Church in Joburg built in 1913 and the Great Synagogue on Wolmarans St. Happening for the first time in three years since Covid hit this tour focuses on one of Joburg's less explored histories.

Meeting Place:  corner Dora St & Beit St (near the entrance to Ellis Park Stadium).
