Jozi Gold Official Trailer
This catastrophic story about the gold mining industry in Johannesburg follows Mariette Liefferick, a glamorous and impeccably dressed grandmother who is also a fiersome activist on a relentless mission to hold the local gold mining industry accountable and to force them to clean up their toxic mess which pollutes communities living next to old mine dumps.

Doomed with the reality of an impending environmental nightmare, the documentary film trails Liefferick as she confronts a perishing gold mining industry whose exploits have laid waste to the land and unleashed hefty radioactive waste that pollutes the air and turns water into poison. Described as "a story of wealth, greed and poisonous mountains" the film see the charismatic Liefferick reaching out across South Africa’s sharp social divides as everyone from people living in poverty in informal settlelments to Afrikaner farmers, government agencies, NGOs and intertnational scientists call on her for help and advice.

Directed by Sylvia Vollenhoven and Fredrick Gertten, this is the tale of a city with a mining industry in decline that has produced a third of all the gold mined in human history and yet which also now faces catastrophic environmental issues caused by the ill-fated methods of its wealth accumulation.
