A nature reserve and heritage site, the Melville Koppies (koppie means small hill in Afrikaans) boast archaeological remains of Stone Age and Iron Age settlements and great views over the city. The geology of the koppies goes back three billion years and the area represents the last conserved remnant of Johannesburg's ridges as they were before gold was discovered in 1886. The vegetation here is entirely indigenous and provides an excellent example, close to the city centre, of the richness of highveld grasses, flowers, and trees.

The Friends of Melville Koppies lead three-hour guided walks (4km) and hikes (10km) of the Melville Koppies on Sundays, introducing groups to the flora, fauna, ecology, archaeology, and history of this beautiful nature reserve. 

On Sunday mornings starting from 8:00 until 11:30, you can get your morning workout in without having to enter the gym with their challenge to complete the 5km trail in under a or you can opt to take it easy and reach 10 000 steps.
