Head back to the 2000s with the Naughty Aughties at SMAC Gallery. From the dot-com bubble, low-rise jeans, and the rise of social media, to the AIDS crisis, 9/11 and the subsequent War on Terror the 2000s the decade was characterized by an explosion of ideas and events. It is no surprise then that the art coming out of that time was bolder and riskier than before as artists tried to make sense of the world.

“Transforming chaos into holy fire, as they have always done, they make space for us to breathe, experience our inner worlds, and recognise ourselves, for better or for worse, in our outer worlds.”

For this exhibition the gallery has curated some of the most influential and controversial contemporary artworks from the 2000s and in doing so have created a visual chronicle of what was a turbulent decade.

In writing on the exhibition for SMAC Alexandra Dodd says the role of these artists was: “Transforming chaos into holy fire, as they have always done, they make space for us to breathe, experience our inner worlds, and recognise ourselves, for better or for worse, in our outer worlds.”

The exhibition features a wide range of different artists including Conrad Botes, Sibusiso Duma, Rosie Mudge, Kagiso Pat Mautloa and Nandipha Mntambo, amongst others. In revisiting these artworks the Naughty Aughties allows us to reflect not only on the 2000s but also on the influences these years continue to have now.
