Quickly becoming a go-to in Joburg’s inner city, Asisebenze Art Gallery, 34 Loveday St, Marshalltown, opens a new show on Sat, Mar 14 at 10:30.

A two-person exhibition with Nolwizwi Lamula and Mpho Nkadimeng, Converging Truths is curated by Tanya Krain, manager at Asisebenze. The show is rooted in the lived experiences of the artists, and the dialogue between their works unveils the complexities of the self, and how our myriad choices and cultures form and shape us.

Nkadimeng, from the village of Dennilton (Limpopo) and a Tshwane University of Technology graduate, works in water and spray paint to explore questions of identity and counter-culture. His philosophy that "one is never one" frames the self as something always in flux, shaped by what came before and still being pulled towards what's next.

Lamula works across painting, photography, performance, and installation, with a practice built around identity, memory, and spirituality. Her recurring figure, Lynetta, a spiritual avatar who exists between realms, reclaims indigenous African hairstyles as markers of resilience and cultural continuity.

Converging Truths opens at Asisebenze Art Gallery on Sat, Mar 14 at 10:30 and is well worth a visit to the City Centre. Make a morning of it with coffee and pastries at Troy’s Café next door.
