Sophiatown's heritage centre and museum Sophiatown The Mix presents Number 47...Divided an extensive exhibition dedicated to the memory of the once colourful and multi-cultural neighbourhood in its 1940s and 1950s heydays before it was demolished as part of the apartheid state's policy of forced removals. Recounting the cold winter’s morning when, as in the words of former resident Patricia Mokwena-Harvey “that sledgehammer hit our home, our lives, our labour was lost”, the exhibition reconstructs the fateful day in 1955 when the forced removals began through photographs and testimonies from former residents.

The Number 47...Divided exhibition is also complemented by a series of walking tours every Saturday during the exhibition. The tour traces a path through the few buildings that survived the bulldozers and includes the opportunity to chat with some of the residents of Sophiatown who lived through the forced removals and later moved back to the neighbourhood after apartheid ended.
