Maboneng-based independent cinema The Bioscope proudly partners each year with Shorts HD to bring the year's Oscar® Nominated Short Films to the Joburg big screen. The series features the five short films nominated in the Animation and Live Action categories, with each screening showing all five films per category back-to-back.

Highlights of the Animation schedule include:

Bao A heartwarming tale of an ageing Chinese mom who gets another chance of motherhood when one of her dumplings (bao) springs to life as an active, giggly little boy.

Animal Behaviour Academy Award-winning husband-and-wife team, Alison Snowdon and David Fine’s latest offering imagines an hilarious group therapy session for animals, led by a dog.

Weekends A sobering hand-animated film exploring the effects of divorce on little children, Weekends follows a young boy shuffling between the homes of his recently-divorced parents, with dream-like moments brought together with the harsh domestic realities of a recently-broken home.

Highlights from the Live Action schedule include:

Madre (Mother) When a single mother receives a call from her seven-year-old who is vacationing with his father, she is elated. Until he reveals that he is all alone, and has not been able to find his father for hours.

Detainment Based on the chilling true story of ten-year-old killers Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, Detainment focuses on the police questioning of the kids and features a script based on interview transcripts from the James Bulger case.
