Soweto-born photographer Phumzile Khanyile is the recipient of the 2015 Gisèle Wulfsohn Mentorship in Photography. The mentorship programme helps young photographers to develop their art and activism in the spirit of late South African photographer Gisèle Wulfsohn who was particularly well known for her documentation of the AIDS crisis. In her series Plastic Crowns Khanyile probes the stereotypical visions of gender, sexual preference and related stigmas, in particular promiscuity, and examines the barriers between contemporary and traditional thinking about sexual expression.

Opening event Wed Feb 8 from 17:30.
