Celebrate the art of documentary storytelling at the 25th edition of the annual Encounters Documentary Film Festival at Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. The festival showcases the best of South African films that explore truth, authenticity and the power of visual narratives. The three-day event at Goethe-Institut screens selected documentaries and is free and open to the public, offering a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of documentaries.

Programme: 

Thu, Jun 29 from 14:00 – Join the co-director of Theatre of Violence, Lukasz Konopa, for a filmmaker's masterclass. 
Fri, Jun 30 from 12:30 – Watch a screening of thought-provoking Miners Shot Down by Rehad Desai followed by a Q&A.
Fri, Jun 30 from 14:30 – The screening of Standing on Their Shoulders by Xolisa Sithole, which pays tribute to the powerful 1956 Women's March and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, will be followed by a Q&A with the director. 
Sat, Jul 1 from 11:00 – Julia Jaki's film Dorpie, a story about a social worker committed to the safety of young women in the small town of Bredasdorp, will be followed by an in-conversation session, 'The Making of Dorpie: Film Craft for Social Impact'. This is a wellness forum featuring directors Kethiwe Ngcobo, Sara Chitambo, and Julia Jaki which explores the power of storytelling in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, focusing on films such as Black People Don't Get Depressed. The conversation will be followed by a cocktail and networking event from 15:00.
