Sophiatown Jazz Encounters

This heritage centre in the historic neighbourhood of Sophiatown, the 1950s home of South Africa's Drum generation of artists, poets and musicians, also serves as an intimate jazz concert venue with Sophiatown Jazz Encounters usually taking place on the last Friday of each month and regularly starring some of the leading names in jazz in Joburg. Guests are invited to bring their own drinks and snacks to the concert. The centre will provide glasses and ice. Concerts start at 20:00.

Fri June 29 at 20:00 - Bheki Khoza Quartet
The supremely talented left-handed guitarist from KwaZulu Natal performs at the Sophiatown Jazz Encounter accompanied by his own quartet. Khoza studied jazz in the USA in the early 1990s and prior to his international studies was a prominent figure in the local jazz scene playing as a session musician for icons such as Sibongile Khumalo. These days he can mostly be found writing and performing his own evocative compositions which are rich with traditional influences with Khoza counting his Grandmother and the sounds of his childhood as his chief musical inspirations.
