Fine wines, modernist furniture, contemporary ceramics, post-war paintings, sculpture, print artworks, photography, art books and so much more are all under the hammer this week in top South African auction house Strauss & Co's online auction of Modern, Post-War, Contemporary Art, Decorative Arts and Wine.

This exciting online sale presents an enticing and eclectic array of beautiful things to bid for online at a range of price points starting from as little as R3,000 for unusual paintings and prints, stretching up to R350,000 for an exquisite Stanislaw Trzebinski sculpture. The online auction is curated into eight sessions each representing something special for both devoted collectors and everyday art lovers looking to invest in something special.

October Online Auction highlights

Design & Colour
The first session presents an enticing collection of design classics including furniture, lighting and tableware. Among the many highlights are a pair of Rennie Mackintosh inspired chairs, Art Nouveau Rene Lalique glassware, gorgeous Art Deco lamps and statement designer dinner services by Roberto Cavalli and Versace.

Staff picks
For every online auction the Strauss & Co team of art consultants curate a session filled with their own favourites from the latest collection. Among the staff picks featured at this week's auction are distinctive prints by Walter Battiss and Robert Hodgins, delicate wooden sculptures by artists including Julius Mfete and Mashego Johannes Segogela, and a magnificent 220cm by 307cm tapestry by Masana Tapestries.

Qhubeka Foundation/Absa Auction for Good
This session in aid of the Qhubeka Foundation includes some fantastically unique contemporary works including sculptures by Collen Maswanganyi, Wayne Barker, Stephané Conradie and Stanislaw Trzebinski. Qhubeka Foundation is a charity that empowers South Africans through the provision of bicycles and this session also includes three art bicycles customised by contemporary artists Izanne Wiid, Nkhensani Rihlampfu and Angus Taylor.

Paintings, works on paper, prints and multiples
Among the 358 works included in these three sessions are pieces by some of South Africa's most famous modern and contemporary artists including Peter Clarke, William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Cecil Skotnes, Sam Nhlengethwa, Deborah Bell, Gordon Vorster and landscape painter John Meyer. There are also some lovely pieces talented lesser-known South African artists up for grabs at estimates that at just a few thousand rands.

Art Ceramics, Sculpture, Portfolios and Books
An unusual collection of smaller ceramic artworks and sculptures by emerging and lesser-known local artists are on offer, as well as dozens of highly collectable art books and portfolios covering South African and international artists.

Wine
This October wine sale presents an intriguing collection of 55 lots. On offer are plenty of vintage South African wines including bottles from winemakers Meerlust, Vergelegen, Boekenhoutskloof and Thelema, as well as rare French Premier Grand Cru Classé A Bordeaux wines.

How to bid in Strauss & Co's Online Auctions

Register online through the "Register to Bid" link and complete the short form. This can be done from the moment the sale opens. You can browse the online auction by lot, department or artist, with a filter option allowing you to also search for items based on price or keyword.

Clicking on "Submit your Bid" brings up the bidding popup window, which features a “submit “button that allows you to accept the next bid value. Up to the last hour of the auction, if you have an active bid you will receive an email and an SMS when you are outbid on a lot. Successful buyers will receive an email after the sale has closed, detailing purchased lots and check out procedures.
