Strange Land

Friday May 24 - Sunday Jun 16       Cnr Lilian Ngoyi St and Miriam Makeba St, Newtown

Described as a 'docu-play' Strange Land centres around the life and mind of Dimitri Tsafendas, the man who assassinated Prime Minister Henrik Verwoerd, the so-called 'architect of apartheid'. At his murder trial Tsafendas was declared insane and confined to a mental institution for the rest of his life. However, those who visited Tsafendas in the late 1990s before he died have contested that the murder was politically motivated and not a result of his apparent madness.

Looking sharply at South Africa's repressed memories of the past and the struggle to find truth among the collective recollections of the apartheid era, the play probes at Tsafendas' motivations, asking whether his assassination of Verwoerd was motivated by madness or whether he was simply a sane man living in an insane land.

No performances on Monday.
