Alcohol might be off-limits at the moment under South Africa's latest lockdown rules, but that doesn't mean you can't invest in some bottles of something special for the future! In the latest fine wine auction from top auction house Strauss & Co an outstanding collection of vintage French Champagnes and Burgundy wines is going under the hammer in an enticing online auction.

The Burgundy and Champagne-themed sale takes place at 10:00 on Sunday July 25 online at the Strauss & Co website. The sale is a treasure trove of some the very best wines including extremely rare bottles such as the 1998 Domaine de La Romanee Conti, Romanee Conti (with estimates of R 200,000–R 300 000) and a 1998 vintage from La Tache. Other top French vineyards featured in the sale include Domaine Rousseau, Fourrier, Leflaive, Colin-Morey and Roumier and Champagnes from Salon, Krug, Dom Perignon and Laurent Perrier.

How a Strauss & Co Live Virtual Auction works

To join in the bidding online, first create an account by registering on the Strauss & Co website straussart.co.za. Sign in and select 'enter auction' which will open the bidding console on your computer with a live feed of the auctioneer. Once you submit a bid, your number will appear on the screen followed by any competing bidding numbers until the auctioneer closes the lot.

In addition to bidding live online, you can also submit phone bids with Strauss & Co's team manning the phones in the room, or submit absentee bids beforehand, detailing the ceiling amount that you would like to bid for a work (you will 'win' your bid if no other bidders exceed your pre-set limit).

Ahead of the auction you can browse the full catalogue online at straussart.co.za.
